Digital Media Design & Criticism explores fundamental aspects of visual creativity and expression from the perspectives of artist, citizen, and creator and consumer of art. This course is unique in that it expects students learn visual arts fundamentals, and to demonstrate mastery of visual arts standards, by applying fine arts techniques. It teaches visual art fundamentals in a context that is relevant to today’s high school students by applying techniques and aesthetic principles from fine arts to the new media and entertainment formats that dominate students’ visual world. The course also incorporates “21st century skills” that today’s students need to thrive in post-secondary learning and careers. The course is designed specifically to show students how investing in their own artistic development can open many potential avenues for lifelong learning and professional success.
