ROP BIOTECHNOLOGY I
Biotechnology is a field with many applications to our lives including disease prevention, creation of new medicines, and food supply improvement. Students will be introduced to the scientific concepts and laboratory research techniques currently used in the field of biotechnology. Students will develop laboratory skills, critical thinking and communication skills. Topics include DNA labs, making gels for bacteriological techniques such as plating, culturing strains of bacteria and manipulating DNA to achieve transformation of the colonies. Instruction in DNA theory, ethics, and technology and society will be included to acquaint students with this rapidly developing field. Earn ten Life Science credits or ten elective credits per year toward high school graduation.
Prerequisite:
- Completion of one year of high school Biology or Life Science with a grade of “C” or better or instructors consent.
- Completion of high school Algebra with a grade of “C” or better or instructors consent.
