The McKinney-Vento Education Services for Homeless Youth

Working With Homeless Children

 and Youth in Napa Schools

"I really just wanted to be treated like everybody else" - A Homeless Student

Keep In Mind -
›Avoid using the word homeless, instead say McKinney-Vento eligible
› Most students and families would rather not have anyone know their residence status
› Homelessness in itself is not against the law
› Honor confidentiality when talking to students and families around others
› Pursue complete records and information, once the student is enrolled
› The schools' priority is for students to come every day, and be ready to learn
› We cannot address all issues, but can refer to outside agencies
› We live in a resourceful and caring community with lots of support services

Be Caring, Fair, Honest and Respectful
›Be positive
› Interact as you do with all children
›Reassure them of their place in the school
›Reflect on what they say, your response is not as important as your full attention
›Refer any concerns to your site administrator or NVUSD McKinney-Vento Liaison
