The Catalyst Coalition has put together a publication for parents on how to talk with their kids about alcohol.  Information includes valuable tips on a range of topics, such as alcohol and health, parties, driving, and more.  Appropriate for elementary, middle, and high schoolers.  Click below to access the publication online.

The Catalyst Coalition is a grass-roots group of interested advocates who are using their collaborative strength as a “catalyst” to address and combat youth substance abuse in Napa County.  The Catalyst Coalition is made up of four City Teams, representing parents, service providers, schools, elected officials, businesses and youth.

 

City Teams in American Canyon, Napa, St. Helena and Calistoga are working within their unique communities to identify local issues surrounding youth substance use, and to develop effective, targeted strategies to address these problems on a local level.  Each City Team has contributed to the creation of a county-wide Strategic Prevention Plan that has been adopted as a five-year work plan.

 

Strategic goals of the Catalyst Coalition:

            1.  To reduce the age of onset of any drug or alcohol use
            2.  To decrease the frequency of use in the past 30 days
            3.  To increase perception of risk or harm
            4.  To increase perception of parental disapproval
            5.  To reduce the prevalence of DUI incidents

 

Quantitative data from the California Healthy Kids Survey and The Community Profile on Underage Drinking Survey, in addition to qualitative data gathered from discussions with City Team members, are being used to develop relevant, effective prevention strategies.

This collaborative project was funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Heath Services Administration and will be a replicable program model to begin similar collaboratives in other communities across the nation.
